June 2025
Dear friend,
Lately I’ve been completely into photography again. Here’s the thing. In 2012 I graduated cum laude from the Photo Academy in Amsterdam. I was very happy with that recognition, because when I started at the academy I had, to be honest, no idea how to read a photo, let alone judge a photo on its merits. During my education, I immersed myself in conceptual photography and artists’ books and I developed a love for sequences. Everything I made, I made in sequences that I published in books. 15 books to be exact.
One photo didn’t mean anything to me.
And now suddenly I understand the value and meaning of just one photo. I still have many questions. Questions to which I hope to find answers, which I would like to share with you.
In the summer of 2010 I was in Switzerland. I was in the second year of my education. I had brought a plastic, ready-made and an old analogue camera. I started experimenting, that was the intention. When I went to the lab to pick up the developed film after the trip, it turned out that the plastic camera had leaked slightly. The owner of the lab rubbed it in even more. What I had developed here was nothing at all! My self-confidence took a big hit. Disappointed, I threw the film in a box at home. I didn’t go back to the lab. From then on I started photographing black and white and developed the film myself. Two weeks ago, the film reappeared. I wanted color again. And as it turned out, there were some nice photos among them. Photos that I can use in my next projects and that rekindled my passion for photography.
So here is what I am going to do. Once a month one photo, one question and an observation and maybe an answer.
Hope to see you on substack!
